Become a Horseowner

Talk to a horseowner and he'll tell that some of his proudest life moments are standing in the Winner's Circle for a picture with his horse.

Is it difficult to get to that position? Not really. The easiest way is look for a horse to claim out of race. When the horse leaves the gate, the horse is yours (except for the purse that the horse may have won).

Before you claim a horse, you need to identify a trainer whose style (and fees?) you like. Then go to the Manitoba Horse Racing Commission office in the backstretch and fill in a license application and indicate whether you'll be the sole owner of the horse or will have partners.

Then you obtain an "open claim certificate" and open an account with the bookkeeper with enough funds to pay for the horse you intend on claiming.

Then ask for a "claim form" which, in consultation with your trainer, you fill out. The trainer will have a last look at the horse before the race to see if he spots any problems. If he sees none, he drops the claim into the claim box.

And, if you're the only person wanting to buy that horse, tah-dah, you're a horse-owner! If other claims have been entered, there will be a "shake" to come up with the winning claim. The claims are put into numbered envelopes and a draw is made to determine which envelope has the winning claim.

For more information, contact the Horsemen's Benevolent Protective Association at 832-4949. They have an excellent Thoroughbred Ownership Guide, which discusses trainer's fees, vet bills, horse sales, how to invest in horses as a business and much more.

Get together a bunch of friends, business partners, etc. so all of you can chip in the necessary funds to operate a stable. And, when your wins, all of you can crowd into the Winner's Circle to share that proud moment!
