Custody Battle gets upset win in Frank Arnason Sire Stakes

Custody Battle gets upset win in Frank Arnason Sire Stakes

Custody Battle was able to capitalize on the bad start of post time favourite to score the upset in the Frank Arnason Sire Stakes on Sunday.

Custody Battle, trained by Chad Torevell, sat behind leaders Duplicat and Vinegar Jim down the backstretch and started his move midway through the turn.  Taking the lead at the top of the stretch, the 3-year-old son of Battle Cat was able to draw off to win by two lengths.

Coming into the Arnason, Custody Battle was not able to put things together in three tries against open allowance company, however that didn’t dampen the spirits of the Custody Battle camp.   “We liked our chances coming in,” said Torevell, “he had been training well and it unfolded well for him today.”

First time starter Enzec showed tremendous promise with a game second place finish.  Trained by Wayne Elias, the Act Smart 3-year-old sat at the back of the pack down the backstretch and made a powerful three wide move in the turn but could not catch the winner coming for home.

After rearing at the break, the post-time favourite Spying Eyes, trained by Randy Gray spotted the leader over 20 lengths almost losing rider Alan Cuthbertson in the process.  However, the son of Battle Cat was able to make up the distance and only lose by six lengths and finish third.
