Race of the Week Gold Strike Mile (Colt and Gelding Division)
Redemption for Spying Eyes
The Gold Strike Mile for colts and geldings was redemption time for Spying Eyes and rider Alan Cuthbertson. After being left in the gate some 20 lengths in the Frank Arnason Stakes in July, the pair were able to rally to finish third beaten only six lengths.
The redemption began with a good start in the Gold Strike and Spying Eyes settling in nicely behind the leaders going down the stretch for the first time. Sitting in behind the early leaders Custody Battle and Battlestation, Spying Eyes began to make his move on the outside through the final turn, then set his sights on leader Custody Battle coming into stretch.
In mid-stretch, the Battle Cat gelding was able to take the lead and went on to win by just over a length.
Custody Battle, trained by Chad Torevell, commanded the lead and the rail early and continued to provide the pace setting fractions throughout with Battlestation just to his outside. Going into the final turn, Custody Battle, also by Battle Cat, was able to shake off Battlestation and had the lead coming into the homestretch, but was not able to hold off the winner at the wire
Pulledmeout, trained by Doug Mustard, sat mid-pack throughout the backstretch and rallied for third.
