Prayforthesoldiers captures second Futurity for trainer
There is no better honour as a trainer than being known for being good with 2-year-olds. A win by Prayforthesoldiers in this year’s Winnipeg Futurity presented that medal to trainer Aaron Sayler.
Aaron Sayler in his second year of training on his own picked up his second consecutive Winnipeg Futurity. Makayla’s Baby, a gelding named after his daughter, gave him his first.
Sitting well back in the field early, Prayforthesoldiers attempted to make a move up the rail around the final turn, however it wasn’t until rider David Lopez swung out at the top of the stretch was he able to set down for the drive.
Overtaking the two leaders throughout the race, Beauty for Ashes and Tease The Tiger in midstretch.
“We knew that there was going to be a lot of speed in the race,” said Lopez, “and he had gone a distance so we were fit. He showed his closing kick once we swung out.”
Beauty for Ashes, trained by Melissa Lyon, the only filly in the race, battled for the lead throughout with Northlands Park invader Tease The Tiger and was able to hang on for second.
Tease The Tiger, shipped in for trainer Monica Russell, sat on the outside of the filly and held on for third.
